Following the great success of presenting physiotherapy, safety, and body awareness topics at the Prague Shibari Festival and The Other Side of Ropes, we are pleased to announce that Aniya will host a full-weekend workshop at Subspace.
A workshop for both models and riggers exploring what hypermobility actually means in the context of rope. We’ll challenge common myths and assumptions around flexibility, mobility and stability, learn to recognise controlled and usable range of motion, and explore proprioception, body awareness and compensation. We’ll look at how to choose structures and use rope as external stability, and why that support can sometimes become problematic. We talk about active vs. safe bottoming and why they’re often equal.
During the practical exercises, we’ll focus on finding appropriate positions for your individual needs, exploring how they change under load and how the body responds to that load. Expect plenty of practical tips on how to control your body during ties, as well as a decision-making guide to help you navigate your session safely.
How can problems manifest, and what signals does the body give us? We’ll look at what to watch for during a session, how to recognise and describe what is happening, and how to identify delayed symptoms and recovery needs afterwards.
While this workshop is mainly focused on models, hypermobile riggers will also find plenty of useful information. We’ll cover practical tips for your fingers and wrists, as well as lifting techniques for suspensions.
Requirements
This workshop is intended for intermediate to advanced students who are already proficient in basic suspensions. Knowledge of a two-rope Gote (Takate Kote) is required.
About Aniya & Joan von Brook
Aniya started her rope journey five years ago as a model and has lately been exploring the other side as a rigger. As a physiotherapist, she sees rope through anatomy, biomechanics and load management, teaching topics like nerve injury prevention. She lives the line of doing demanding things without sacrificing the body in the process, and believes rope doesn’t have to be reckless to be powerful. Her approach centers on safety, small yet meaningful adjustments, active modeling, shared responsibility, treating everyone as informed active participants. Aniya enjoys challenging misleading beliefs and stereotypes in health, tying approaches, roles, and the common patterns we fall into during sessions. Her workshops are for those who want to keep doing crazy stuff sustainably.
Joan von Brook is a shibari enthusiast since 2013, she began her journey as a model but soon expanded into tying. She has been teaching workshops and performing domestically and internationally since 2015. While her main inspirations as a rigger are Soptík and Nicolas Arnoys, her modeling background allows her to draw heavily from demanding ties in Naka-ryu, Yoroi-ryu, and her work with Tifereth. As a teacher, she is passionate about designing practical exercises for all experience levels that focus on the profound connection and shared experience between the tyer and the tied.
