Budoucí Nicolas ryu mini-ws & study group: Flow & dialogue (ENG)

What actually creates the feeling of flow between two people in ropes?
And when does tying stop being a sequence of techniques and start becoming a dialogue?

In Nicolas ryu, flow is not something mystical or performative. It emerges from the ability to listen and respond through the rope — through direction, tension, timing, balance and the continuous exchange happening between two bodies.

On this study group we will explore how movement, pressure, rotation and changes of axis can become part of an ongoing conversation between partners. How the rope can guide, suggest, support or provoke movement instead of simply fixing the body into positions.

We will work both on the floor and in partial suspensions, focusing less on patterns and more on:

  • leading and following
  • responsiveness and adaptability
  • clarity of intention
  • biomechanical reactions of the body
  • continuity of movement and tension

The goal is not to “perform flow”, but to understand how it can physically emerge through cleaner communication and more attentive rope handling.

You will take away:

  • a deeper understanding of flow as a practical skill
  • more sensitivity to your partner’s reactions and movement
  • clearer communication through tension, direction and timing
  • better ability to create movement with minimal rope
  • more confidence in improvisation and transitions
  • a stronger sense of dialogue between both sides of the rope

Structure of the evening

Gyaku ashi. R/P: Joan, M: Luke Ropes

Mini workshop
Each meeting begins with a guided practical exercise. This introduction is designed especially for people new to the style and serves as an entry point to the topic, allowing everyone to immediately engage with the practice.

Shared practice & discussion

The main part of the evening is dedicated to collective learning, sharing experiences and reflecting on personal exploration.

The study group is not a conventional workshop focused on teaching fixed sequences or ready-made solutions. Each session is a collaborative study of one topic within Nicolas ryu through a series of exercises, observation and shared experience. Rather than memorizing techniques, the focus lies on understanding, application and integration into your own tying style.

We would also like to invite you to the weekend Nicolas ryu workshop focused on Enzo, Flow & Dialogue, taking place on October 10–11, 2026 (in Czech).

About the Style

Nicolas ryu (formerly Yoroï ryu) is an original rope style developed by A-Nicolas. It draws inspiration from the martial art of Aikido and combines elements of Thai massage, dance and contact improvisation.

Nicolas ryu connects the strength and stability of ties with minimalist construction, flow and intense partner connection. If you are looking for a way to achieve more with less, you are in the right place. Minimalist tying built around maximum connection with your partner. Tying in this style is not static, but based on organic movement and flow.

One of the unique aspects of this style is that its individual principles can be integrated into your own tying practice. You can therefore be deeply rooted in completely different rope styles and still find these evenings inspiring and enriching.

You can learn more about the creator of the style at a-nicolas.art.

Level

Suitable for participants with basic rope knowledge, especially the ability to tie a stable single column tie and handle rope comfortably. Rope bottoms should be able to recognize and communicate their body’s signals. The ability to communicate clearly is essential for both partners.

For topics involving partial suspensions, basic familiarity with suspension lines is an advantage, though participants are always welcome to remain working on the floor.

Observers only need an open mind and respect for the active participants of the group. Participation in discussions is warmly encouraged.

Bring with you

  • Ropes – four to five ropes. Suitable length is 7,5-8 meters. There will be ropes to buy on spot. If you are not sure which are suitable and how much are they, you can visit our rope eshop www.provazem.cz or send us a message. Ropes will be available to borrow too.
  • Comfortable clothes which allows free movement and will not interfere with ropes.
  • Optionally a scarf.
  • Notebook and optionally inspiration to work on during the study group.
